This is four-movement work draws inspiration from Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Bartok. The first movement features cadenzas for the cello, and is romantic in style. The second movement is a Scherzo with a fugue that serves as the B section. The third movement is a somber chaconne, written in Ab minor. The final movement is a Sonata-rondo that alternates 7/8 and 5/8 measures throughout the main theme. Material from the first movement returns near the end of the work.
